HOW CAN YOU ACHIEVE THE BENEFITS OF A GREATER SENSE OF PURPOSE?

On a scale of 1 to 10 how purposeful are you feeling today?

It’s very easy to settle into the groove of maintenance activities and find yourself running like a hamster on a wheel just to maintain the status quo. The energy drain of this lifestyle seems to be impacting more and more people these days:

  1. Professionals who cry out “I am very busy”, also often report that when a project comes to conclusion they feel as though they haven’t really achieved very much.
  2. Parents who take on the role of taxi drivers for their children ferry them to a range of different classes and social activities, family members tend to feel exhausted (and often stressed and irritable) and slightly disconnected from their children.
  3. University students attend and complete their degrees, some of them are incredibly clear about how they intend to progress their careers, but many report feeling lost having gone through the academic process and remain uncertain about their future direction.

I speak to people from many different walks of life who report an absence of purpose in their lives, some of them own up to low-grade depression, the majority confess to a sense of stagnancy.

Language so often gives us insight into why we might not be feeling so great – if you think about the opposite of the word purposeful, you would probably conclude that it is purposeless?

Purposelessness isn’t really that uplifting, so if you are seeking to discover or rekindle your sense of purpose there are several steps you can take:

  1. Make the decision to establish or rekindle your sense of purpose
  2. Disengage from activities which you use to distract your mind from achieving more meaningful objectives in life
  3. Set time aside to identify aspects of life which inspire you and would pull you forward towards a deeper sense of satisfaction

A sense of purpose and direction is an immense gift in life which:

  1. Motivates you when you are feeling flat
  2. Inspires you to raise your standards
  3. Focuses your mind
  4. Enables you to experience meaningfulness and satisfaction
  5. Builds your self-esteem and self-respect

If you want to make discovering or rekindling your sense of purpose a priority for your future, why not join a small group of like-minded individuals in the Dolomites 15th to 21st December. The trip will combine some ski training to enhance your enjoyment of the mountains and some time to receive coaching to facilitate your life goals.

The mountains are an especially good environment to disengage you from all of the day-to-day habits which hold you in the counter-productive ‘hamster on the wheel’ cycle. Being liberated from a familiar routine is a wonderful way to create the space for new thinking, new vision and a fundamentally new future.
